I think one of Severus' problems is he does what he can, and if he saw a different solution, something he thought would help (and Albus permitted), he'd be doing it already. So he needs someone to nudge him in different directions, bring in some new ideas, and then bit by bit, maybe he'll get somewhere he hasn't been able to until now.
